Pearl River Estuary Ship Collision: 2 Missing, Nansha Ports Closed with Vessel Delays
On October 25, 2025, a bulk carrier traveling from Guangzhou to Shanghai collided with a container ship near the Mayoushi Lightship in the Lingding Channel of the Pearl River Estuary and sank, per the Guangzhou Maritime Search and Rescue Center.
As of 16:00 on October 26, 13 out of 15 people who fell into the water have been rescued, while 2 remain missing. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
The accident has disrupted shipping in the region. Major ports like Nansha, Huangpu, and Humen in Guangdong are affected, with large vessels largely unable to enter or exit. The reopening time is undetermined, and large ship delays are expected in the coming days (typically until the rescue operation is officially concluded).
